What are cookies?

Cookies are files that store information on your hard drive or browser. They allow this website to check whether you have already visited the site.

Cookies enable us to understand which pages of the site are most visited, as they allow us to see which pages are viewed and for how long. Through this data, we are able to make the site more aligned with your needs and simplify navigation.

Applicable legislation

Italian legislation (Art. 122 of Legislative Decree 196/03 "Code regarding the protection of personal data", hereinafter briefly the "Code") introduced into our legal system a European Directive requiring website operators that use cookies or other tracking technologies to inform users about the types of cookies used by the site. The Provision of the Italian Data Protection Authority No. 229 of May 8, 2014, published in the Official Gazette No. 126 of June 3, 2014, categorized cookies into two macro-categories: "technical" cookies and "profiling" cookies.

Technical cookies

Technical cookies are those used solely for the purpose of "carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide such service" (cf. Art. 122, paragraph 1, of the Code).

They are not used for any further purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or operator of the website. They can be subdivided into navigation or session cookies, which ensure the normal navigation and use of the website (allowing, for example, to make a purchase or log in to access restricted areas); analytics cookies, which are equivalent to technical cookies when used directly by the site operator to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site; and functionality cookies, which allow users to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided.

The installation of such cookies does not require the prior consent of users.

Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user during web browsing. Due to the particularly invasive nature that such devices can have on users' privacy, European and Italian legislation requires that users be adequately informed about their use and express their valid consent.

Article 122 of the Code refers to them where it provides that "the storage of information in a subscriber's or user's terminal equipment, or access to information already stored, is only permitted on condition that the subscriber or user has given consent after being informed in the simplified manner referred to in Article 13, paragraph 3" (Art. 122, paragraph 1, of the Code).

In the same Provision, the Authority also categorized cookies according to the entity acting as data controller for the personal data collected by the cookie, distinguishing between first-party cookies and third-party cookies.

First-party cookies: these are cookies managed by the website owner. For these cookies, the obligation to provide information rests with the website owner. The latter is also responsible for indicating the methods for any blocking of cookies.

Third-party cookies: these are cookies managed by a third party other than the website owner. For these cookies, the obligation to provide information and indicate the methods for blocking the cookie rests with the third party, while the website owner is required to include a link to the third party's site where such elements are available.

For both types of cookies (first-party or third-party), the collection of consent, necessary when the cookie is a profiling cookie, takes place through a dedicated banner on the site's home page.
